During these difficult economic times, it is heartening to note that Britain’s 2.5million independent tradesmen are pumping £35billion into the economy. However, like everybody else, these white van men are also feeling the pinch.This revealing documentary series shows how some shrewd businessmen are using their vanbased operations to explore new moneymaking opportunities, often with surprising results. Van man Dan has tried his hand at many jobs, including those of pilot and stockbroker. However, when his consultancy firm went bust, he decided to start a white-van empire. He now has over 40 drivers on his books, and is hoping to eventually expand the business to 100 employees.

To secure his dream, he constantly buys up second-hand vans, often from his uncle Gordon, a used-car salesman. Gordon claims he has a bargain for Dan, but when the budding entrepreneur takes the latest lorry out for a test spin, he is less than impressed. “Is that the real mileage?” Dan asks incredulously after clocking the odometer. It is then time for the family members to haggle over the asking price. Will they be able to remember that blood is thicker than water?

However, never one for an early start, Dan is late for an appointment in his own house. To mollify his cranky workers, he fixes everyone a bacon and sausage butty, although the final offering is rather burnt.

43-year-old Wayne has it all – a beautiful girlfriend, a close relationship with his son and a thriving marquee business. Wayne visits a community centre in Kingston. The Korean festival is coming up and Wayne is hoping to win a contract to supply the festival with a marquee. Wayne has a connection with the organisers that he hopes will give him the edge. But a previous event saw a member of Wayne’s staff clashing with one of the community centre’s workers. Can he use his charm to smooth over the cracks and secure the contract?

East Londoner Jim has a deep affection for his Ford Transit, even if it proves less than reliable at times. “It’s beaten to buggery but it does its job,” he reflects. Having been a welder since the 1970s, Jim is facing his second recession. However, his economic situation is much more comfortable than it was in the 1980s, and he now lives in the suburbs with his wife, daughter and large collection of pets. He still has to graft hard though, and has recently branched out into buying and fixing up discarded items.

Jim is given the job of dismantling an old funeral home, with part of his payment being two coffins – one of which has been used. “You never know when you might be needing them!” Jim says, although it is unclear what he has planned for the caskets. Later he picks up a motor scooter for £50, although he cannot see the appeal of the mopeds himself. After spending £15 on repairs, he sells the scooter for a tidy £400. With profits from this and several other ventures, he takes the family on a mini break to the Spanish coast. However, while Jim wants to sunbathe, wife Di wants to go shopping.

Times are now so good that he has even been able to hire his daughter’s boyfriend Brad as paid help, albeit on a work-experience basis.

Usually called in to fix railings and perform other standard metalwork, Jim is about to start a more eyebrow-raising project: a client wants him to build a human-shaped cage for sado-sexual purposes. After using Brad as a sizing model and meeting up with the client to discuss his blueprints, Jim sets to work. He is clearly pleased to have such a large job to do during the current crisis. He is also pleased with the end result. “It’ll be going on the website,” he says of his latest project.
